DOKU Experience Center in PalaisPopulaire

Artist of the Year 2022

The Chinese artist LuYang is Deutsche Bank's “Artist of the Year” 2022. The artist was born in Shanghai, where he lives and works today. LuYang is one of the most internationally influential Chinese multimedia artists. As the “Artist of the Year,” LuYang will be showing his first major solo exhibition in Germany at Deutsche Bank’s PalaisPopulaire in Berlin in the fall of 2022.

“LuYang represents a young generation in Asian art for whom it is not a contradiction to combine myths, ancient traditions, and spiritual thinking with the latest technology and science. We are particularly pleased to honor LuYang in 2022, coinciding with Deutsche Bank's 150th anniversary in Asia,” said Anna Herrhausen, Head of Deutsche Bank’s Art and Culture department.

The “Artist of the Year” award is being presented for the eleventh time on the recommendation of the Deutsche Bank Global Art Advisory Council, consisting of the renowned curators Hou Hanru, Udo Kittelmann, and Victoria Noorthoorn. The award goes to promising talents who have created an oeuvre that is artistically and socially relevant oeuvre integrating the two focal points of the Deutsche Bank Collection, works on paper and photography.

DOKU Experience Center by LuYang at PalaisPopulaire

The exhibition DOKU Experience Center focuses entirely on a virtual reincarnation called Dokusho Dokushi, or DOKU for short. The gender-neutral avatar is a hyperrealistic figure whose countenance is modeled on LuYang’s face. All facial expressions and movement patterns are performed by dancers and then recorded using motion capture technology, a process that generates 3D models on this basis for video games, for example.

As in a futuristic research laboratory, all six digital versions of DOKU can be experienced in the exhibition. In addition to the first narrative video DOKU the Self, LuYang’s music video DOKU the Matrix, conceived expressly for the show, and the new series Bardo #1, which shows the avatar with its respective attributes in round mandala compositions, are presented.
