Built in 1997, the Guangdong Museum of Art is among the first batch of national key art museums, and a modern multi-functional art museum integrating collection, research, display, education, exchange, and service. As an important showcase to display the cultural image of Guangdong and promote the culture of South of the Five Ridges (Lingnan), it unswervingly implements the cultural mission of “inheriting Lingnan art tradition, exploring art ecology, promoting international art exchange, and enhancing the artistic literacy of the people”. Based on local conditions, it influences the Greater Bay Area, bears in mind the general picture of the whole nation, and keeps the orientation to the international community. The museum continuously seeks breakthroughs in high-quality collection, high-level utilization, and high-quality services, and strives to build a national and even world-class art palace.
Since its establishment, the Guangdong Museum of Art has adhered to the academic attitude of “conscious, independent, inclusive and diverse”, setting “Chinese modern art, especially Guangdong and coastal modern art, international art and contemporary art” as its direction of academic research and collection, exploring diverse curation mechanisms, promoting modern art research, and sorting out the contemporary art ecology. At present, it houses over 40,000 pieces (sets) of objects, including traditional categories such as traditional Chinese painting, oil painting, print and sculpture, as well as contemporary works such as installation, image and video. It has established a collection and research system consisting of five major sections: Guangdong art, Chinese modern art, contemporary art, overseas Chinese art and international art, and art literature. As the most important art collection and research base in South China, it has launched academic brand programs with international influence, such as the “Guangzhou Triennial”, “Guangzhou Image Triennial”, “Guangzhou Design Triennial”, and “GDMoA Annual Artist Academic Nomination Exhibition”, which have won national awards for many consecutive years. Based on its own collection and academic orientation, the Guangdong Museum of Art has established research centers such as Guangdong Modern Art Research Center, Guangdong Contemporary Art Research Center, Art Literature Research Center, and Artwork Protection and Restoration Center in Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, and influential academic propositions in a diverse academic atmosphere. It has witnessed and driven the progress of Guangdong fine arts and contemporary Chinese arts.
